Zebra’s DS3600-XR has an unparalleled working range, bringing new levels of productivity to workflows with the rugged durability your industrial environment needs.
The Business Challenge
Zebra’s DS3600 series barcode scanners are rugged enough to survive environments where devices are frequently dropped and are commonly used in warehousing, manufacturing, and distribution. These scanners are a popular choice for applications such as inventory management, picking, processing, quality control, track and trace, and more.
In essence, RFID is the combination of a reader that is equipped with a special antenna to collect data, and the RFID tag placed in the environment to provide the data. Data is collected using wireless radio waves, removing the need for line-of-sight or ambient lighting. RFID data can even be collected through materials, such as cardboard, paper, or plastic. The scanning process is what is known as one-to-many, meaning only one reader can scan many tags, which differs from the traditional barcode scanning option.
Industrial environments tend to be the harshest on scanning devices that are needed to perform routine and mission-critical tasks. Greg points out that if the devices cannot withstand harsh industrial environments, they create business challenges, such as:
-
-
- Lost productivity
- Compromised scan reads
- Cost increases
-
A Design in a Class of its Own
Zebra works hard to create the toughest scanners they can to withstand the toughest of environments. The DS3600 series barcode scanners create a gold standard in ultra-rugged design. Zebra tests their devices directly over concrete, unlike many devices that are dropped onto plywood over concrete.
Greg highlights some of the specifications and features that make the DS3600 series barcode scanners ultra-rugged:
-
-
- Highest drop spec in its class of 10 ft./3 m directly onto concrete
- Withstands 7,500 consecutive tumbles
- IP65 and IP68 rating
- Ultra-rugged “go anywhere” cradle to match
- Built to withstand blazing heat and sub-zero temps
- Built to survive underwater applications
- Industrialized tether hook
- Wrap-around LEDs
- Smart battery and Bluetooth icons
- And more
-
A Model for Every Need
Zebra’s DS3600 series barcode scanners are mostly used for transportation, logistics, warehouses, and manufacturing because of the durability and longevity of the scanners. The scanner engine change with each type of device is what allows the variety of different cases. Greg provides greater detail about the different options available:
-
-
- 2D Extended Range (XR/ER)
- BT Dongle
- 1D Extended Range (ER)
- 2D Medium Range (HP/KD)
- 2D Standard Range (SR)
- 1D Standard Range (SR)
- 2D High Density (HD)
- DPM & Wide 1D (DP/DPA)
-
DS3600-ER
Zebra’s DS3600-ER 1D/2D Extended Range barcode scanner is ideal in warehouses and ports and is the most popular version of the 3600 series because it can scan barcodes very close or out to 70 feet away. Greg highlights other aspects of the DS3600-ER, such as:
-
-
- Captures standard and extra-wide 1D/2D barcodes
- Battery power for up to 70,000 scans (cordless only)
- Supports UID parsing
- Corded and cordless models
-
DS3600-XR
Zebra’s DS3600-XR 1D/2D Extended Range barcode scanner is the updated model that has a newer scan engine, getting roughly 40% better range than competitors for long-range scanning capability. The newer scan engine has a green laser aim that is seven times more visible than the red laser aim that is used in other models. Look at Zebra’s DS3678-XR Ultra-Rugged Scanner to see how it could work for you.
Greg highlights other aspects of the DS3600-XR, such as:
-
- Enhanced visibility across the working range with new aiming technology
- Captures barcodes from less than 2 in./5 cm to over 105 ft./32 m
- 7x more visibility across the working range and up to 10 ft./3 m outdoors
- Battery power for up to 80,000 scans (cordless only)
- Superior cordless technology
- Virtual tether

Webinar Wrap-Up
Zebra’s DS3600-ER is not going away as it is a very popular model and widely used. The DS3600-XR is an additional option to provide even greater coverage and is offered at the same price as the ER. The XR is available for businesses that want to get enhanced outdoor visibility and application, such as field service, scanning and rail yards, ports, lumber yards, and more.
Bob and Greg complete the webinar by answering the following questions:
-
-
- How long do the batteries last during a workday, in general?
- Is the device available with a cable or is it 100% cordless? If I wanted a cable, which device would you recommend?
- If I want to put a device in a cradle to stand it up or attach it to a forklift, what would you recommend?
- Bob: Do you have any examples of where the Zebra DS3600 series scanner has been used to help improve function and operations at a business?
